天然銅 native copper

最近、知り合った友人が天然銅の塊を見せてくれた。冶金学をアラスカ大学で教えていた人で、今は引退して、悠々自適の生活をしているおじいさん。もともと、カナダの北西準州のアサバスカンの人々が住んでいた村出身で、フェアバンクスに５０年前ほどに大学進学のために来たという。
Someone I met recently showed me a chunk of native copper from Canada. He used to teach metal smith in Fairbanks.

緑色に見えるのは緑青だろうか？写真だと見えづらいが、緑色の部分から銅色の部分が透けてみえる。この塊自体は、カナダで金鉱堀りをやっていた知人からもらったものだという（正確な産地は不明）。おじさんが育った北西準州の村でも、天然銅が採れて、アサバスカンの人々は沿岸のクリンギット社会と交易するときに、銅を交易品としていたという。実際に、大昔には鏃や槍を天然銅で作っていたとも言っていた。おじさん情報によれば、カナダ・ユーコン準州のクルアネ湖で操業していた金鉱夫は、金を探すときに副産物として５つの銅製鏃を見つけたという。こうしたものはちゃんと遺物として考古学者に報告されているのだろうか？
 This piece comes from his friend, a Canadian gold miner, and my acquaintance is not entirely sure where it comes from. In an Athabascan village in Northwest Territoty, Canada, where he grew up, native copper was in high demand as trade goods. Coastal Tlingit people wanted it, so Athabascans in Interior gathered it for trade. Also, according to my acquaintance, a gold miner who operated around Kluane Lake, Canada, found 5 copper arrowheads when he was trying to find gold.
